National University Sport Federation – FADU 

The Portuguese National University Sport Federation – FADU – was founded in 1990, celebrating this year its 20th anniversary. It is a sport federation with Public Use status since 1995 and a member of Portuguese National Olympic Committee and Portuguese Confederation of Sports. FADU is a member of the world governing body FISU and was one of the founding members of EUSA.

FADU began its international participations at the 1991 Sheffield Universiade (Great Britain) and one year later it participated in the World University Handball Championships in Malaga (Spain). 1993 was a year of particular importance for FADU since it was officially recognized as a FISU member and took part in the Buffalo Universiade (USA). Since then, it has participated in every Summer Universiade.

FADU has developed and grown into one of the largest national sport federations. At present, it is also responsible for national competitions in more than 30 sports involving over 7000 athletes. It also supervises the National Finals stage and has organized a number of international sporting events.

FADU’s public interest status that confers to it public rights and responsibilities at the University sports level. Its annual plan of activities involves more than 10.000 students in 86 events.
